TURQUOISE MINE TOUR
The Mine Tour:
Welcome to our Turquoise Mine Tour. The Mine tour is 1-1/2 to 2 hours long and the cost is $30.00 per person, cash only. We will take you to our personal turquoise mine, The Little Chalchihuitl, New Mexico mining claim #166080, in the Cerrillos Mining District, just north of the historic village of Cerrillos, NM.
The Mine History:
The mining district dates back to the 900’s. Native Americans were mining the turquoise mostly during the 1300’s to the 1500’s. Upon the arrival of the Spanish, who chased them away, so that they could mine the galena ore for bullets, the Native Americans had been mining the galena ore to make a type glaze on their pottery. In the district there are about 75 turquoise mines.
In Territorial New Mexico, 1870’s-1910, many mines were worked for silver, galena, iron, manganese and copper. In the district now, there are over 2,000 abandoned mines. Today there are 7 mining claims being worked.
The Mine Today:
At our mine, you will see 3 holes being worked. We are chasing 2 veins going downhill. Our turquoise is green in color which is caused by the iron in the ground. At our mining claim, which is on 20 acres, you will have an overview of a beautiful valley and views to the west toward the Rio Grande valley.
This eco-tour of our mine is very special and we hope you come enjoy it.
Sincerely, Todd Brown
